Image: CBT motorcycle training CBT is a one day training programme that is compulsory for all bike riders. The programme gives you a sound basis for your riding progress by equipping you with the necessary information and skills, through lectures and practical on-site training. We aim to make the day an enjoyable and informative one, and encourage pupils to participate as fully as possible in order to gain the maximum benefit of the training.

CBT information:

You should . . .
Bring your license (both the card and the paper counterpart if its a relatively new one)
Bring payment by cash or cheque (cheque payee Vision Motorcycle Training) see prices
Read the Highway Code (they are only a couple of £s from most stationers)
Wear clothing that will offer you protection - ideally approved motorcycle clothing, however if you don't have any then a heavy jacket, trousers, heavy soled shoes/boots may be used. Please do contact us for further clarification.
Be at the school for 08:20 to start at 08:30
Expect to finish by 17:00
We can provide you with a safety helmet and gloves to use for the training if you don't have your own.

Agenda for CBT

Image: CBT motorcycle training Eyesight test and tea/coffee reception
Pupils have tea/coffee while completing the VMT registration form. The eyesight test requires you to read a vehicle registration mark at a distance of 20.5 meters in good daylight, with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn.

Classroom lecture 1
In this lecture you will learn the aims of the approved training course and the importance of having the right equipment and clothing.

Practical on-site training
After this you will:

  • Be familiar with the motorcycle, its controls and how it works
  • Be able to carry out basic machine checks and to take the bike on and off the stand
  • Be able to wheel the machine around to the left and right with proper balance
  • Be able to stop and start the machine

Practical on-site riding
At the end of this you will be able to:

  • Ride the machine under control in a
    straight line and bring the machine
    to a controlled halt by braking
  • Ride the machine slowly under control
  • Change gear
  • Carry out rear observations
  • Ride the machine around a figure-of-eight circuit under control
  • Perform a controlled u-turn using slow riding techniques
  • Carry out controlled braking using both brakes
  • Bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency
  • Carry out simulated left and right turns using the observation-signal-manoeuvre and position-speed-look routines

Classroom lecture 2
You will be taught the need to:

  • Ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road users
  • Use rear observation at appropriate times
  • Assume the correct road position when riding
  • Leave sufficient space when following another vehicle
  • Pay due regard to the effect of the weather condition when riding
  • Be aware of the various types of road surfaces

This phase of training should be followed by the on-road section as soon as possible.
